Essay:

1. I would choose to be free because why would a being want to live in a world that is not real but an illusion to what the reality is, it disturbs human beings to know that they are not in control of their lives. When we realize the true image we refuse to be in denial because wev'e been fed the idea that what we see is real but the truth is that the Government wants you to see that.
2. Plato discusses a Utopian society where if you just accept your place with what runs through your veins , you will be much more happier, i disagree because what about the people who wanted gold or silver in their blood but instead received bronze making them feel like the weakest element in society.
3. We should not let our government decide what remedy is best for us because it will be hard for a few to accept their methods into modern law.
But to not know the reality and be occupied with the illusion of being happy; we would be better off knowing the truth because internally it would break our spirits to know that its not real.
Plato expresses a perfect world but it is false what appears as perfect can become an epidemic of spreading misery of how unreal it really is.

A. In the United States, I would rather be happy than living in a free world. Living free, but not happy does not get you anywhere. You will not be a happy American. Your life will be filled with a lot of misery and lonliness. As American's today, we are still not free nor are we equal.
B. Being happy gives you more opportunities. I rather be given the choice than just doing something on my own. Being happy makes you feel comfortable. If you look outside the box being happy can also open doors to emotional freedom. If your happy, it's just like living free.
C. Having everything free just makes the world have more chaos. The world would have a lot of hatred. Countries would have more problems with each other; the world would not be a happy place to live in. I rather be happy then free and living in terror every time I step foot outside of my house.

i. I would rather live free than happy. This is because: 1. Being free allows me to have free will and choice. I have a right to choose my attitude, feeling, destination, and so on. Now if I were to choose happiness over freedom I lose the essence of choice and free will.
2. When I am free I am liberty to choose to be happy. Being free makes me happy.
3. I can be free and happy but if I choose happy and not free then I will limit myself to only being happy.

Essay:

I would rather be free than happy because:

a. Freedom is the only way to find truth in ones life.
Freedom is the thing that sets humans apart from animals. We have logical skills for a reason. We do not inhabit this earth to bow to the wishes of others. To be captive to anyone but God is against human nature. We must exercise our freedoms to embark on our own spiritual journey to find what truth really is.

b. Freedom leads to opportunity.
How many Communist millionaires are there? Few. When oppressed by a government, personal opportunity is sacrificed to maintain "equality". We are stripped of our own personal venture in life to fulfill a mandated quota, whether it be in a factory or at a software manufacture. Stripped of this opportunity, we as humans lose all of our drive and motivation to succeed. Opportunity is essential in the human drive and spirit.

c. Freedom gives us a choice
Freedom gives us a choice, bound by nothing but ourselves. Existentialist philosopher John Paul Sartre says that we are must be the proud author of our own life. We must make our decisions for ourselves and be completely prepared to accept the penalties. This is our ultimate freedom; complete responsibility. Though I suppose this is as much a blessing as it is a curse.

Essay:

I.	According to Plato, men are born into a certain class within society. In order for society to harmoniously work, men must give up their freedoms and accept the life they were born into. Those who read on Plato are forced to question if they would prefer freedom or happiness. After learning and finding a better understanding of the given topic, I have concluded that I would chose freedom over happiness.
II.	Reasoning to choosing Freedom
A.	Every individual, regardless of bloodline, is different.
1.	From the moment we are born, humans see the world in different ways and grow into their individual selves through the experiences and risks have in life.
2.	It is only human nature for people to want what they can’t have. If we are told to live a “happy” life knowing we could have something even more meaningful in life (freedom), the temptation would haunt us forever
B.	True happiness cannot be found without freedom
1.	Claiming that one is happy without being free is completely contradictory. Imagine someone was imprisoned without them realizing it. If someone was confined to a greater world or knowledge, yet was being told they were happy, would they truly be happy? They would mentally believe they were happy, but in a physical state, the truth would unfold.
2.	Plato imagines a perfect society in which everyone accepts reality for what it is with no question. Everyone does their “duty” happily and without complaint. According to Plato, this is freedom. However, if someone within that society rebels, they’re punished. If this was truly how society worked, would being forced to live a certain way with the fear of punishment qualify as happiness. If the government calls Plato’s world “happiness”, then the world “happiness” has a false meaning.
C.	According to the existential themes of choice and commitment and moral individualism, every individual must make his or her own decisions in life.
1.	It is through the choices we make that define us as individuals and separate us from the rest of society. Each human must take his or her own risks to understand who they are as a person and as a member of society.
2.	Plato’s Republic would not allow individuals to be given either freedom or happiness. It is through freedom that we are given a right to make our own choices, yet it is through happiness that we are allowed to enjoy life.
III.	Men are not robots and should be given the freedom to grow as individuals. If forced to choose between freedom and the happiness the government could give me, I would choose freedom. “Freedom is a state whereby one is free from the control of fate or of necessity” (Landry.) If my fate is written without my consent, then it comes a necessity. With freedom, I would be given the right experience the necessary order to find my own individual self. Once I found out who I was meant to be in life, I could find the ultimate power within myself, the freedom to choose my own destiny—a destiny that could ultimately lead me to true happiness, for the “happiness” described by Plato is only a mirage to the human mind.

Essay:

If we were in a world where we had to choose whether we wanted to be happy free or happy, i would have to choose happines. For the follwing reasons, i would have to chose this decision.

I would chose being happy over freedom because one i believe that freedom would have it catches. I believe if we had freedom like we have now, the government would have a hold on us ultimitly. To some individuals being able to own a business and have money is more to them than having family by their side. I on the other hand i do not know what i would do without my mother who has supported me through thick and thin, my great grand parents and most of all my boyfriend. Life would not be worth living.

Another reason why i would rather be happy over freedom because i love my family to death and i have expierences in both worlds, of being weathly and being in poverty. I have noticed family memebers that have let money take over thier worlds, and that is what they let take over thier world. I know that it is a nice feeling to walk into your business, and be able to pull out money. I also understand the way it is, and feels to not be able to have money to buy milk. Yes, times were down but my family and I never let it get to our relationships. I was happier when i was poor than when i was above water because again, with money some people let it get to thier heads and individuals get "bubble headed", meaning they get cocky for having more money than others, they feel superior.

My last thought on this topic is that, nobody is really able to be free. All through your life someone is controlling you and there will always be someone higher than you. From the moment you are born you are a child to your parents. They raise you up, guide you, and tell you what to do. If you do as your supposed to you have to obey them. So in that instance they control you the first eight-teen years of your lfe. After you leave your parents home you think you are your own self controller and guider but your not. As soon as you turn eight -teen the government expects you to do certain responsibilities, most of the time if you do not follow their requests then there are some kind of consequence. If you expect the government to help you out when you need it then you should expect to do something for them in responce. So in a way they also control you.

In conclusion I would rather be happy than be free. Freedom is never really free. Happiness is what you make of it.

Essay:

If we lived in a world that we had to choose between being free or happy, I think i will have to choose to be hapy for varies reasons. Most people I think will chosse to be free and do whatever they want, but I think that having money or owning something is not really that inportant because money is not happiness.
I think that when everyone is born your born a slave to someone such as your parents or society and you cant do anything about it, you have to follow the rules of society right in your start of life. Even if you dont want to you have to because your parents are not going to let you do whatever you want, so that proves to you that your a slave as soon as your born. When i was born even if i liked some type of clothes i couldnt buy them because my parents said people didnt like them i was free because i was able to do anything i wanted but i wasnt happy.
I think you can never be really free because your going to have to follow someone rules and if you dont like them your going to suck it up, as if your happy but not free your really going to enjoy life to the fullest because you already like the way you are and you dont really care about the rules or limitations they have on you. I think your really never going to be free and happpy because if your free your not going to like some rules that they put on you.
I think a perfect example for being free and being happy is the Matrix. The guy has a choice of being free or being under the control of the Matrix, he chooses the matrix because he thought that he was going to be happy because thats how the matrix made it seem, but whhen he was there he was miserable they were putting him threw alot of test and he wasnt happy anymore he thought because he chose to be free he was going to be haooy but he wasnt he doesnt even know what is happening in hi sorroundings, i bet if he had another chance to choose he wouldnt have chose the matrix again.
I think if we had to choose over free or happy most people would have chosen free but me i would of chose happy because you can never really be free, your born as a slave to society and if your under some type of control your not really going to enjoy life such as the guy from the matrix. So if you had to choose over being free or happy wich one would you pick.

Essay:

Given the circumstantial situations discussed in class, I would rather be free than be happy. However, if the same question were to be posed a week ago, my answer would have differed so it is evident that recent personal events have shifted my perspective. The reasons for my choice of freedom are as follows:

A. I hate being held under false pretenses and I strongly believe that happiness can not truly be achieved when it is based off of a sugar coated lie. Therefore choosing happiness over freedom would be like choosing an empty promise over a guarantee.

B. Freedom can lead to individualistic happiness, but happiness can not always lead to freedom and may in fact restrict a person while confining them in an environment they falsely perceive as comforting.

C. The final reason would be simply because I enjoy knowing things that the majority of people do not know. Plus, I am a devil's advocate so looking at things in a different way is a fancy of mine.

Essay:

Often in our lives, we come across a figurative fork in the road and there is one very important question we must ask ourselves and that question is this; would i rather be free or happy? Although this may seem like an easy question on the surface, if delve into it a little deeper, we come face to face with the consequences and positive effects of our answer to this question.
Were i to decide to be happy then free, i would not have true happiness, merely a dreamlike state where everything is done for me. Choosing the path that leads down direct happiness is like living in a life long stupor for surely no one would choose utter dependence and superficial happiness, it would be as if we are in a coma having an extroadinarily long dream, as in the matrix. Sure, i could choose happiness, but is having everything about your existence pre-determined before you are born really happiness? is not being able to control who you will marry, what job you will have, where you will live, but all the time being none the wiser, absolutley oblivious that you have no say in your life truly happiness? or is it merely happy in relation to fighting for what you believe in and acheiving happiness while simultainiously attaining your freedom even though it will not always be the "safest" or the most comfortable thing to do. having control of your own destiny, throwing a pre-outlined plan of life to the wind and not settling for the norm is freedom, and having freedom is the happiest feeling in the world.Happiness is not some God given right, that is why people are merely endowed with the right to pursue happiness, that is what our fore-fathers wrote in the declaration of independence. a declaration of freedom from oppression and enslavement. thomas jefferson knew that the only way to be happy is to be free, and i feel the same way.

I would rather live in the Matrix and have my brain tell me how good steak is. I wouldn't want to live in a terrible world where robots rule all humans and that all there is to eat is the nasty food in the movie. If the Matrix is real right now, then I am happy with the way things are, living in a dreamworld where in reality I'm in a container with tubes all in my body. Essay:

Freedom or Happiness?
If I had to make a choice between my happiness and freedom, I would choose happiness. Understanding that I cannot be both free and happy I would still give up my freedom for happiness.
One reason I would much rather be happy than free is that I do not believe God would put me in a negative situation without having some good reason. Therefore, if I could no be free, well who cares I am at least happy and that is all that truly matters.
A second reason I would much rather be happy is that I would still be with my friends and family. I couldn’t just leave those I love, and for what to not even be happy? No way, I could never give up my friends and family for that.
My final reason is, well if I cannot be happy then why would I want to be free anyways? Most people want freedom to be happier but if I would not be able to be happy then forget freedom. All that truly matters is happiness; if you were not happy in life then it was a wasted life.
In conclusion, I would be fully satisfied with the initial decision to be happy. I do not think I could give up happiness because of God, friends and family, and well happiness. Anybody who would dare to make a different choice I feel sorry for them.

Essay:

In the movie, "The Matrix," Neo was given the chance to live free or live happy. He made that decision based on a simple pill he took. In his decision, he chose to be free. I agree with Neo that living free is a wiser choice than living happy because it expands our mind of expression, gives us the right to be a human and grieve about suffering that will happen in people's lives despite being shielded.
If everyone were to live happy, we wouldn't be able to express how we really feel. We should be able to be given the right of freedom to express ourselves and what feel. If everyone were to have the same emotion, there wouldn't be any uniqueness to our lives. No one will be different and it gives no interest in new life.
Everyone should be able to be a natural human being. They should be able to make mistakes and learn from them. Being human is making mistakes in general and learing to fix those problems to earn your right of happiness. There shouldn't be anyone to force us to be happy because it only proves that we would be weak as humans.
How are people able to grieve if our emotions are shield from us? It isn't right for people to block the real problems that people suffer from over the years. There are many issues with our bodies and mentality that grow stronger as we get older. In time, people won't know that they are happy if they don't understand the meaning of sadness.
A part of being happy is knowing that you are better off than you were before. We need a comparison to our emotions in order to know that we are happy. Being free will allow us to experience the real happiness that the artificle live tries to offer.

Essay:

It took me a lot of thinking to decide what I wanted more: freedom of

happiness. The Matrix shows a loss of freedom in society because

everybody lives in an extremily controlled world. They are, nevertheless,

somewhat free to perform their daily activities and relationships with other

people while not directly compromising their happiness. Although the

movie is 100% fiction, it is not 100% impossible. If I had to choose

between freedom or happiness, I would personally choose freedom.

*For me personally freedom equals happiness. I am a very free-spirited

person and a grat part of my happiness consists of being able to do and

care about whatever or whomever I wish. This may not be the case for

other people, but my personality demands freedom and choosing freedom

over happiness would mean getting both for me. I would never be able to be

happy in a controlled society where I would need permission to do every

activity my body or heart demanded.

*Freedom can be achieved easier than happiness. How can someone

assure you that you will be happy every second of your life? I believe

happiness is a state of mind and it's about adapting to what you have and

working with it to live in harmony with yourself and othjers. Throughout our

lives we describe happiness as many different things because our situation

is everchanging. By choosing happiness over freedom one would be risking

everything.

*When the declaration of independence was written, its wise writters

believed that our Creator granted us the natural rights to life, freedom, and

the pursuit of happiness. They were written in that order for a reason,

because they knew that liberty comes before happiness because

happiness is not someone can achieve easily or definately. Knowledge is

freedom, and that would mean that if we were to live in happiness without

freedom, we would have to live in a state of ignorance, like mice in an

experiment that are unaware of the fact that there is a world beyond the lab

where they reside. Our world would turn into a laboratory with human

beings that differed little from robots or trained animals.

In my onpinion, Freedom is more important than Happiness. Happiness is

less reliable than freedom, and therefore you risk less choosing freedom.

Humans are always seeking stability, and freedom would provide it, while

happiness would just create chaos. After all, Amerca is suppossed to be

the land of the free.

During the time in class you’ve given us the choice to think about what life is really made of and to stand up for what we believe in. You’ve taught Plato in class and how we are classified in three different types of blood groups: gold, silver and bronze. Which Plato believed that people will not learn from teaching but from questionings. This all relates to whether if I want to be happy or have my own freedom.
1.	I would rather have my freedom because without it how can you be happy. You’ll be in a different way of looking at life. When you’re free, you can truly see the meaning of happiness because that is where you will find it.
2.	I would rather have my freedom because I think the knowledge of the unknown makes me happy. It’s like what Plato said; you learn when you question things.
3.	I would want my freedom because I would not want to have boundaries to what I want to know.

If I had a choise to be free or be happy i would pick being happy. because what is life werth living if you are not happy. like in the matrix he wanted to br free and he sall what life was realy about and he wanted to go back befor ha knew befor he was free. If we are happy then why would we need to be free.

If we were completly free with no government or nothing then life would be a strugal and we would be over welmed . i think it is better to have someone take care of that stuff like keeping us safe making shur we have food and jobs like the
government does rather than us just finding for our selves.

Happyness comes at a cost but happyness is what keeps us alive and gives us somthing to live for. if we had no government and everything was crazy no cleen water no oil to drive our cars violence and curuption the week being taken advantige of that is no way to live. but having someone in charge controling these things and keeping us happy but at the price of our freedom that is a price i am willing to pay.

This is what I feel I'd rather be free than happy, the reason why I feel this is because when your free you dont have someone constantly breathing down your neck about things. what I mean when i say this is that when your not free your under someones control. I personally wouldnt want to be under someone like a slave. Because i believe in equal rights. No one should have that power over you to begin with.Secondly in the matrix your either free or happy. but the people who are happy are the ones that are controled like animals. The people that are free are not controled and can do whatever they wish to do. Thirdly I feel that if the world ever came down to this i think people would choose to be free than happy. the reason why i say this is because we are born free,no one is suppose to control you like a slave as if your lower than anyone.

Essay:

Freedom or happiness? The question to many people, including myself, was basically not even a question at all because the answer is a given, happiness of course. I mean lets face it who doesn't want happiness? I'm pretty sure that if there was a world in which everything was perfect and just oh so happy, with nothing wrong ever occurring, everyone would surely choose that lifestyle, right? Just image it no fighting, just smiles and laughter is what would be filling up the room, and I bet if someone even went to look up the word happiness the description of this word would be in there. So, why wouldn't everyone choose that world? Isn't that what everyone is always searching for is happiness?
Well, see that is it, those are the questions that I kept on asking myself. I mean I know that happiness is something that everyone is always looking for, but the way that I think about it is that if everything were all good and no bad then I don't think that we would be truly thankful and happy with the things that we are fortunate to have. You see sometimes i believe that we need to go through some bad, to fully understand what it is that we have in our lives and how thankful we should be to have it.
You see on the other hand if freedom was my answer, then I wouldn't be living that little perfect bubble. But instead, I would be given the bads and it would be up to me on whether or not to fight for the goods. Also, the chance to see why things are the way they are and yes that means that things won't be as easy, but still I believe that when fighting to get through the "rain" then it makes us more grateful when we get own "rainbow." Instead, of just making everything easy and just be given answers, with the only thing that we would understand would be happiness.
In conclusion, if someone was to come into my life and ask my whether or not I would rather be free or happy, I would deficiently choose my freedom. My freedom would be most important to me, because how could someone truly know what happiness is when they were never introduced to the real world? In the world, where being us all sorts of cause and effect chains occurred, which of course make us stronger. As well as those, morals that were given to us from maybe our parents who went through similar things and learned, and got there happiness. With being given my freedom, I think that is when I would finally be able to define my true happiness.

Essay:

A person can't live alone, so people congregate themselves, and they create the society for settling the dispute and harmonizing with the peace and equality. Also people search to achieve the freedom and right for their identity. I definitely agree that people have the right to stand upward for having free, rather than ignoring the peculiar contradiction for an instant happiness.

In the past, the ancient philosophers raised to rationally advance and think the new form of government or society rule, especially in Athena, Greece. Plato, a great Greek philosopher asserts his incredible doctrine toward people which is called the origin "Republic." He claimed the society to have a triple class structure for organizing reason and individuality; he divided the class as productive, protective, and governing with having a wise man as the ruler.
The other philosophical idea came out from English Politian, Thomas Moore, and called Utopian government. It reflects the humanism and it claims the equality, religious responsibility and freedom of being oneself.
Plato’s Republic and Moore’s Utopian government has the similar characteristic which based on the equality and right of being freedom. To seek the freedom is the original instinct and want throughout people. Like the declaration of independence in America is the good example to explain this idea. People always look for obtaining the liberty and justice.

When we saw the movie “Matrix”, the agents (actually they are computer programs) strongly control the rule and tend to eliminate the insurgents like Morpheus and Neo for gathering people perfectly in a solid society. Morpheus confronts to fight them for achieving true, justice and free, but the other person, like Cypher betrays Morpheus’s followers for returning artificial society to end his reality. He repents about choosing the reality. What is right? Morpheus’s combat for real free or Cypher’s return to the imitated world with a guarantee of happiness? I think that happiness is everywhere and anywhere surrounding any place. Before wanting the happiness and joy, you should have the freedom with your own identity and rationality. Living in controlled mentality and emotion from other thing, is not the happiness, even you feel like having happiness, because freedom creates the happiness.

Also people can’t construct and invent the brilliant art and culture without the liberal mentality. For instance, in Renaissance period, a lot of artists painted and made various the literary works with creative thought and sensational joy. Indeed, by these splendid works, people have the luminous history and ideal thought. Keeping liberty and independence can make human as human with art and culture.

The vivid liberty and proud of being in rationality is form of our body’s structure and function to be human as human. Since the ancient period, people pursue the innate freedom and think a several new philosophical thinking. These incredible steps improved the humanity and brilliant organized government. Also if people realize the unfair rule and control, people consciously confront to save the liberty and their own justice. It is instinct that people follow the independence mind, opinion and pursue the liberty.

Essay:

I would rather be free than happy because from what I have observed it is very possible for people to be free and in doing what they want become happy. However i have seen few examples in life where the controlled people are actually happy. Even in communist countries where that is all they know, from what I have heard, they are still not as happy as free citizens in another country, even if financially life is easier on them because they are controlled.
In addition, I would choose to be free because I feel that it is more fair that way. In a free system the people that try hard are usually happier than the ones that do not try. Why should the lazy be just as happy as the people that work hard.
Finally, I would choose to be free because I am happier being able to do whatever I want. I hate having people tell me what I can and can not do. That is why I am republican. I'm not democratic because I do not believe in handing people everything that they need in life. People need to earn happiness; it should not be given to them.

Essay:

I think I would rather be free than happy.

A. Happiness is undoubtedly the ideal emotion, but that's all it is- a feeling. Freedom is everlasting. Freedom is the power to live life under one's own conscience. Personally, I know that my morals are completely individual. If I was not free, but I was happy, it would seem to be more like an illusion than actual joy. I appreciate honesty and I strongly support reality.

B. The phrase, "ignorance is bliss" never made much sense to me. Knowledge is power! Having the ability to see things for what they truly are is a blessing; so many people live under rocks heavy with the standards of society or, especially in America, Christian values. People should steer from these standards and make standards of their own!

C. Forming personal opinions is so important to me. If a person cannot think for themselves, they are lost to the herd, like clueless sheep and cattle. I want to go places, see things, and make my own conclusions; freedom allows me to do so!

Have you ever walked through down town San Diego and not seen a bum? If you have than you are one of the lucky few. People are living is the streets as a result of freedom. The government gives us freedom to manage our own money and sometimes thats not nessesarily a good thing. Wouldn't we be better off if the government could regulate our finances and see to it that everyone got the same amount of cash? Couldn't we stay out of debt if we were told what to spend our money on and when to do it? In my opinion I would rather be happy than free. In our free country now, we are still under constraints and not totally free. I would much rather just give the government more power and not have to worry as much. If the government could jsut distribute things evenly than multiple problems would be solved. No one would be envious of anyone elses belongings and no one would have to worry about how they are going to put food one the table. The economy would propably be better as a result also.

If I had the choice to decide whether to be free or happy, I’d choose to be happy. My first reason would be that I would not know the difference between freedom and happiness because I would not know what freedom is. I would be living in my own world thinking that this is the real thing and that this is real happiness. My second reason is that in the ‘matrix’ I would not have to hide or run away from anything my entire life. I would be able to eat any kind of food I want and live wherever I want without living in fear. My third and final reason would be that I would not have to discover or learn about a completely different world other than the one I would be living in. I would rather live in the same world I have known all my life, instead of having to adapt to a strange place in which I have never seen or heard of. Those are the reasons why I personally would choose to be ‘happy’, and not ‘free’.

Freedom; the power to exercise choice and make decisions without constraint from within or without. Living in a world that isnt seen through your own eyes but the eyes of others isn't reality, being held under false pretense can create no hapiness, but with freedom, hapiness can be achieved without resatraint or permission to do so. Having boundaries and restrictions is like living in confinement forever, when your free, no ones in control of what you do or say and your own opinion is voiced whether heard or not, knowing that you have the power of freedom gives you the right to enjoy surroundings without control or interference in your life. Happiness can fade, and freedom is present forever. Equilibrium in life is what most people aim for and with happiness theres no guarantee of keeping that satifaction that you yearn for.
