Multi-media in education

July, 1999

Frank Schneemann

EDT 660, Multimedia and interactive technologies, is an overview course that delves into the use of multimedia and interactive technologies in educational and/or training environments. It focuses on the design and production of multimedia products, with an emphasis on the appropriate application of learning theories to the designing process.

Also, EDT 660 addresses the criteria for good design principles, utilization of authoring systems, image scanning and editing, video and sound digitization

Multimedia is studied, not for its own sake, but as a tool to aid in the instruction process in elementary, secondary and higher education classrooms. Likewise, educational technology is not an end in itself, it is only a tool that helps us to teach the subjects we normally teach like math, science, social studies and language arts, but to teach them more effectively.

Class Requirements:

  • Students will research 1 article each night that deals with issues in educational technology. Students will turn in a hard copy of the article and be prepared to discuss their issue in class.
  • Students will complete the nightly, hands on,  assignments designed to develop their skills in the use of multimedia devices. Students must demonstrate their skill in using the following devices:
    • digital camera
    • scanner
    • video camera, video dubbing and editing
    • audio devices, audio dubbing
    • video computer devices
    • audio computer devices
    • graphic editing software such as PictureIt 99
  • Students will complete nightly assignments designed to enhance their skills in the use of Microsoft PowerPoint.
  • Students will create a multimedia project that teaches an academic subject. . The projects can not be designed to teach computers or technology but must focus on everyday academic subjects such as reading, spelling, math, science or social science. A story board will be used to design the project.

Grading

  • Points will be given for each of the nightly PowerPoint assignments
