Course Description:

  • Concepts and applications of Telecommunications in the educational environment.

Course Goals

  • Acquaint the student with use of telecommunications as an educational tool
  • Acquaint student with educational uses of the Internet

Course competencies:

  • Ability to discuss hardware and software requirements in order to utilize telecommunications in education
  • Demonstrate ability to use a modem to access distant computers
  • Ability to download programs from a BBS or Internet
  • Ability to understand and access internet mail
  • Understand internet concepts tools such as Gopher, Usenet, Veronica, and/or Jughead, FTP, and their educational uses.
  • Ability to use Libros Library System at NU
  • Ability to discuss, detect and clean computer viruses
  • Understand security issues surrounding telecommunications and Use Policies
  • Understand the concept of Online Services such as Prodigy, AOL, and Compuserve
  • Understand hardware and software choices in educational environment
  • Understand and use web browsers such as IE and Netscape
  • Write a simple web page
  • Develop an awareness and appreciation for the wide range of telecommunications technologies available for educational uses.
  • Understand the process involved in setting-up a PC for internet access.

Course requirements

  • Students will complete each of the 8 assignments listed below.
  • Mid-term project
    Students will create a personal web page using Netscape or another web creation tool.
  • Final Project
    Students will create an Internet based lesson that promotes creativity and high order thinking skills in the students.

EDT610 is a graduate level seminar/project course. Students are expected to demonstrate a creativity, initiative and competence commensurate with their graduate status.
